Welcome to the email pages. These pages contain details and documentation
of email services at the University of Birmingham.
The sections described
below are presented as separate documents. Each document is self contained,
and can be printed as a separate document. The mailing lists section consists
of two documents, one for list owners and one for list users. There are
links within and between the documents.
To display a document
click on the appropriate keyword which appears on the index on the left
of the screen (the Home option returns you to this page). This provides
a fast method of access and navigation between the documents. Items listed
in italics which follow the Home option refer to frequently accessed subsections
within documents.
For the benefit of
new users of these pages, a description of each section follows. The full
titles of each section are given, and clicking on these will lead directly
to the appropriate document.
Throughout the documents,
the <top> symbol can be used to return to the top of the document
being displayed.
- Introduction
to email
This section gives a general introduction to email, explaining the basic
aspects of addressing and features found in most email systems. It is
mostly designed for people who have little or no experience of using
email, although the later parts, including the section on directories,
contain information which will be of use to others.
- Directories
This subsection contains information about directories of email addresses
both on and off campus.
- Local
Addresses and the Central Mail Hub
The Central Mail Hub is described here. The server provides central
Mail Addresses, the ability to redirect your email to a new address
and enquire about destination mailboxes associated with any central
mail address. This section also describes the policy on use of offsite
email facilities.
- Mailing
lists
Mailing lists are used as a means of contacting groups of people via
a single address. At the University of Birmingham, we use Majordomo;
this is a mailing list management system which automates management
of mailing list and allows control of the lists to be delivered to list
owners. Guides for list owners and list users are available. In addition,
we use lists to provide generic contact addresses for departments and
other organisational entities within the University.
- Junk
Mail
Junk email is unwanted and unsolicited email sent to many people at
a time. Like its paper equivalent, junk email is generally considered
to be a nuisance. This section contains information about junk email
and advice for dealing with it.
- Email
News
Contains news about the Central Email Service.
- Miscellaneous
This section was set up to contain miscellaneous information about email
which is only of use to relatively few users, or does not naturally
fit elsewhere. Currently it contains information about non standard
Internet addressing (X.400, BITNET/EARN).
- Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ)
This section contains a list of frequently asked questions about email
at the University of Birmingham and gives advice and answers where possible.
Most of the answers will point to information on other WWW pages. The
page will be updated frequently as and when new questions arise which
will be of interest to others.
- Pegasus
These pages give instructions on how to use Pegasus and are illustrated
with example screen shots.
