Local Addresses and the Central Mail Hub >> Central Mail Hub

All email at the University of Birmingham is routed through two Central Mail Hubs, also known as central mail servers. All staff and students have a central mail address on the mail hubs. Mail addressed to these central mail addresses is forwarded to the server on which their mailbox resides. Most people receicve email on mail servers supportes by Information Services, although there are many mail servers run by departments and research groups which are also used for email.
At Birmingham the address of the Central Mail Server is:

bham.ac.uk

The Central Mail Server also supports a range of other facilities. Mailing lists are supported, and some filtering of hostile email, such as viruses and junk email is carried out. This is described in the junk email section of these pages.. There are a total of three mail hubs, one which primarily handles incoming mail and on site delivery, a second one which queues and delivers off site mail and a third which acts both as a development system and a standby system.
