Junk Email Current Blocking Action

Several methods of blocking email are being carried out. These are discussed in more detail below.

If the email comes from on campus from an identifiable sender, then action will be taken against the sender or sending organisation if an effective course of action can be identified.

In serious cases, the matter will be reported to the relevant authorities (UKERNA, Police, etc.).

Currently IS blocks email from a range of sites at the Central Mail Server using more than one method. The methods used are the same as those used at many other sites, although exact details of policies are subject to change with little or no warning. When messages are blocked, a reference to the following page is generated http://email.bham.ac.uk/block.htm. This links to a page to allow people to look up why a message gas been blocked by using the IP address of the blocked sending system.

Some blocking measures can sometimes prevent legitimate communication. If you suspect that this has happened, please gather as much information as you can, including the error message and the address of the sender and the server being blocked. In most cases you can find the solution to the problem by looking at the Web sites which carry the lists that we use (see details of current action, above, and explanations below). Most of these problems can be resolved by whoever supports the sender's email system. If there is still a problem you can report it to the IT Service Desk, in the main Library (47171, email: Helpdesk@bham.ac.uk . Note that they are not a forwarding service for people who have had messages blocked.)

Information Services will continue to take appropriate practical measures to reduce the amount of junk which passes through the central mail several within the resources available. As senders are constantly revising their strategies in attempts to circumvent blocks and filters, it is sometimes necessary to introduce measures without the opportunity to give notice. In most cases measures will not effect legitimate communication. Any major changes will be reported in the news section of the World Wide Web email pages.
